Students interested in NGO work in Swaziland ?

Are a student interesting in getting some practical work experience by participating in an NGO project in Southern Africa ? Swaziland is a very small country surrounded on three sides by South Africa and in the east by Mozambique. Although it is not very big it has a great deal to offer the tourist with a number of game parks and nature reserves. There are plenty of initiatives available for students to participate in, including healthcare, engineering and so forth.

Mililwane Wildlife Sanctuary

This park is the oldest in Swaziland and visited most often by tourists. When visiting Mlilwane you will experience the peaceful and relaxing atmosphere. To view the park and wildlife in a unique way, try the many horseback trails on offer. This can be done on a daytime tour or if you like exploring you can choose to make use of the overnight horse trails. African Safari vacation packages are extremely popular at the moment and provide the opportunity to explore regions like Swaziland prior to committing to a student volunteer program.

This is an exhilarating riding tour, riding on gorgeous Arabian horses. You will pass through the Sanctuary and ride into the mountains which will offer you a spectacular view of the “Valley of Heaven” commonly known as Ezulwini. As you climb to the top of the mountain you can breathe in the fresh mountain air.

There is also the opportunity to have a refreshing swim in the mountain springs. If you need to do some serious exercise then you can make use of the mountain bike tour. However if this is too strenuous for you there is also the option of an open Land Rover tour. Back at the camp grounds you will be able to see the tame birds and animals that are allowed to roam the grounds freely.  Whatever travel method you use this tour is well worth the time and effort.

Mkhaya Game Reserve

This reserve is situated in the south east of Swaziland and is the home of many endangered species. Here all the animals feel secure and the tourists can view them up close. In this reserve you will come into close contact with elephants, rhino, buffalo and many other animal species. It is here that the black and white rhino have their home and are protected from poachers.  At Mkhaya you will also see one of Swaziland’s own breed of cattle that was saved from extinction.

Malolotja National Park

This national park is one of the most inspiring mountain parks in South Africa. The scenery and the variety of fauna and flora that can be seen in this park are amazing. It is the last untouched mountain wasteland left in Swaziland. It is situated in the north-west part of Swaziland and is the largest protected mountain reserve. Here you will find the highest waterfall in Swaziland, the Malolotja Falls.

The great variety of fauna and flora found in this park is due to the Mgwenya Mountain and the Nkomati River Valley. The mountain, as the second highest mountain in Swaziland, together with the Deep River Valley creates the climate that is needed for all these plants and shrubs to prosper. The flora that can be seen in Malolotja is one of the best attractions for tourists.  There are several species of plants that are indigenous to the Barberton area in South Africa and these can also be seen here. There are also two threatened species of cycads that can be found in this park. The area is perfect for those students more interested in forms of adventure tourism as opposed to the more standard sight seeing options.

Not only is the plant life superb but this park also boasts more than 280 bird species. The park is renowned for breeding many endangered species. These include the blue swallow, blue crane, bald ibis and the Stanley’s bustard. Many bog and vlei type areas can be found within this reserve and these serve as a home for many different bird species.

Many species of mammals can be found in the reserve which is a great attraction for tourists. These include the Aardwolf, Black wildebeest, Red wildebeest which can be found nowhere else but in Swaziland. In the valley you can see the African Elephants and near the Nkomati River Hippopotamus have been sighted. The tourist can also look forward to spotting the Serval, Mongoose, Grey Rhebok, Oribi, Klipspringer and the Red Duiker. A number of smaller mammals have made their home in the reserve such as grass-climbing mice, and various species of shrews.

To assist the nature enthusiasts the reserve has opened an Environmental Education Centre next to the Malolotja River. The centre can also accommodate groups of people and provide them with educational environmental activities. If you want to get closer to nature, a visit to Swaziland should definitely be on your list of places to see.

Not so long ago, people who suffered from chronic alcoholism were placed into mental asylums by their families as a last resort or in some cases frontal lobotomies were performed. There just seemed to be no way to manage the chronic alcoholic. Then in 1935 Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) was founded by Bill W. and Dr Bob. Bill Williamson was a man who had struggled most of his life with alcoholism, ruining a great career on Wall Street and failing to graduate from Law school because of his drinking problem. In later years Wilson met up with Dr Bob Smith in Akron Ohio and between the two of them the seeds of Alcoholics Anonymous were planted. The two of them began a writing the AA Big Book which contains the famous 12 Steps. The 12 Steps are :

  1. We admitted we were powerless over alcohol – that our lives had become unmanageable.
  2. Came to believe that a Power greater than ourselves could restore us to sanity.
  3. Made a decision to turn our will and our lives over to the care of God as we understood Him.
  4. Made a searching and fearless moral inventory of ourselves.
  5. Admitted to God, to ourselves and to another human being the exact nature of our wrongs.
  6. Were entirely ready to have God remove all these defects of character.
  7. Humbly asked Him to remove our shortcomings.
  8. Made a list of all persons we had harmed, and became willing to make amends to them all.
  9. Made direct amends to such people wherever possible, except when to do so would injure them or others.
  10. Continued to take personal inventory and when we were wrong promptly admitted it.
  11. Sought through prayer and meditation to improve our conscious contact with God as we understood Him, praying only for knowledge of His will for us and the power to carry that out.
  12. Having had a spiritual awakening as the result of these steps, we tried to carry this message to alcoholics and to practice these principles in all our affairs.

These 12 steps form the backbone of Alcoholics Anonymous and have helped millions of alcoholics around the world achieve and maintain sobriety. The steps were subsequently adapted and incorporated by many other 12 step fellowships, starting with Narcotics Anonymous.

Thanks to the tireless pioneering work by Bill W. and Dr Bob, a workable solution to alcoholism was finally available to alcoholics. A recent survey shows that there are over 110 000 Alcoholics Anonymous meetings in existence in countries all around the world.

Why is Divorce not the best answer ?

Far too many married couples jump into a divorce proceeding before researching all the options available to them and considering the consequences that a divorce entails. Even if you are unable to afford professional help when considering a divorce, it is still possible to do a bit of research and find the answers online. There are many things to consider when planning to get divorced :

  1. The financial costs
  2. The trauma caused to children
  3. Living arrangements
  4. Ownership of possessions
  5. Updating Wills
  6. Retirement plans
  7. Closing joint accounts
  8. Finding employment if you have been unemployed

This list goes on and on. The costs of a divorce can be financially draining, especially if the divorce id an acrimonious one. The effects of a divorce on children are often brutal, with children finding themselves torn between two parents. A little bit of online research into the topic will reveal the answers. There are hundreds of reasons why couples or marriage partners should first consider relationship counselling before committing to the divorce process. Couples therapy is one of the first things that should be considered by any husband and wife that are contemplating ending their marriage. Far too often we find that people give up on their marriages too easily and don’t do absolutely everything possible to save the relationship. If you have children, you owe it to them at least, to try and work through your difficulties and spare them the emotional pain of watching their parents get a divorce. Karen Rootenberg is a marriage counsellor with close on twenty years experience in helping couples work through their difficulties.

Karen Rootenberg therapist

Karen runs workshops from her practice in Cape Town as well including the immensely popular, Art of Being, course which has been running for over thirteen years now and helped many people break free of old negative behaviors and grow spiritually. Karen is tremendously gifted in the way in which she is able to connect with and empathize with her clients in marriage counselling. There are certainly good counsellors and bad ones. It may be possible to study at University and receive a degree in psychology, but that does not necessarily say anything about your capacity to truly connect with other human beings, or your ability to empathize with them. There are several universities in South Africa where counselling can be studied, should you have a desire to help people and make a career of couples therapy.
